Dr. Lisa Porter is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She began her teaching as a SDAIE high school content teacher in migrant education in Southern California before transitioning to adult education as an ESL teacher serving immigrant and refugee families in Massachusetts. She has taught in multiple countries with students of all ages prior to settling in Virginia. Currently, she co-chairs the Many Voices of Harrisonburg, a community-based collaborative dedicated to enhancing intercultural relations. Her scholarly work within the sociology of education focuses on equitable relationships between families, schools and communities.
